Thoughts on Quinn, Never Can Say Goodbye, and Quick.
I was pretty broken hearted and confused after tonight’s episode. After quietly fangirling over Quick for a couple years, I now want to stand up in my seat and scream at the top of my lungs, “IS THIS REALLY IT?!!!”
For many reasons, tonight’s episode seemed to be the ending of Quinn’s story. She finally got a solo, and one about saying goodbye at that, she got accepted into college, danced with her high school love interests, spoke of letting go of the past so she can go forward into the future, looked through photographic memories, and stated she would forget about those she thought she loved a year from now.
I’m utterly confused as to why it is the writers seem to be wrapping up Quinn’s storyline halfway through the season. It’s like after 2 and a half seasons of being written with wildly uneven character development, she’s suddenly cured of all that and thus ”normal” now and we can write off all those writing mistakes as Quinn’s bad decisions. So what now, Quinn will sway in the background with a smile on her face so that the writers can focus on the new characters? I feel like it’s a very unsatisfying end to years’ worth of buildup.
I mean, what exactly is going to happen with Quinn’s daughter and Shelby? There was no explanation. Will Quinn write letters to Beth? Visit her on winter break from Yale? Will Beth grow up having no memory of her birth parents because of some stupid plotlines involving a crazy scheme and gross relationship? It would have been so nice if the rest of the season was spent with Quinn making amends with her past instead of trying to shut it away in a locker.
Speaking of shutting the door on things, let’s talk about Never Can Say Goodbye. As much we can analyze her dances with her three high school boyfriends, the intent was clear- she was reminiscing and saying goodbye to all of them. It did seem like her dance with Puck was longer and there were definitely more pictures of him in her locker, but that only makes sense given the length and depth of their involvement with one another. There weren’t any signs she wasn’t saying goodbye to him, except a question mark visible on the lock when she shuts the door on her memories. Perhaps the question mark was a way to question whether Quinn can really shut the door on her past, but it was so small that it’s hard to say. And lastly, I don’t think you can put stock into what lyrics were playing at what time in the performance because the entirety of the lyrics are contradictory to Quinn’s message in the first place.
So where does this leave us with Quick? Surely I’m not the only person scratching their head. I think most of us have had a firm belief for so long that Quick is going to be endgame, so when we hear Quinn saying she wants to leave her high school loves behind we’re left scratching our heads. How many episodes ago was it that Quinn ran to embrace Puck after Sectionals? How many episodes have we been waiting for them to duet together when every other couple has already had one? They’ve had a child together, watched over their daughter as Puck confessed his love for Quinn, and sat in bed together as Puck confessed his lasting faith in Quinn. How can these two possibly be written off with this one song? IS THIS REALLY IT?!
Perhaps I’m just reacting to this prematurely. But with the finality of tonight’s episode regarding Quinn, I can’t help but question what the heck the writers’ intent is.

That is quite the romantic gesture.
